Pumpkin Painting!

The 8th grade big sisters came to pick up the 5th grade girls during study hall today to paint pumpkins together! We ventured to the art room, where creativity is always at its best! They became inspired and made artful pumpkin masterpieces! Check it out!

Personal Pronoun Song

Ms. Cheston's group wore their silly hats and sang their "Personal Pronoun" song, in hopes of helping them learn first, second, and third person pronouns. Ms. Merrick wrote the lyrics for her class, we tweaked them a bit because we aren't quite a musically talented! The song is to the tune "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys, (which generation awareness - most the girls had never head of - ugh).

Characterization - What is it Exactly?

The girls in Ms. Cheston's class will discuss what characterization is and analyze the characters in their picture books they have been using for their book report. After learning the three elements of characterization, they will complete a character map of the main character from their book, using the online tool below. This will be in preparation to writing a short story about a personal demon that they could possibly find in the Mountains of Ignorance from The Phantom Tollbooth.

Wall Wisher - A Place to Jigsaw

Ms. Cheston's class used Wallwisher for another lesson on word origins. The girls researched where some words came from - why they are called what they are called, as a follow up activity to Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth visiting Dictionopolis and learning about words. Students were able to see what their other classmates learned as they went through their research by refreshing the wall periodically. If you'd like to see the complete walls, click below! While it looks 'busy' to us, they loved it!

6th Age Partnership

All the 5th grade homerooms have created a partnership with the 6th Age classes to build community, relationships, and mentoring opportunities.  Our students will be reading their October book report picture books to their little buddies in 6th Age.  However, our first meetings have included a getting to know you activity.  Ms. Cheston's girls met with Mrs. DeLorbe's class to make beaded bracelets and then exchange them.   They had a great time and can't wait to return to read their books!

Cultural Scavenger Hunt

The girls' classes went on a Cultural Scavenger Hunt over the last few days to learn about different countries and culture's customs, and to realize that culture involves more than just language and religion.  Everyone has culture - and belongs to different cultures - Calvert culture, Family culture, Baltimore culture, religious and/or language culture, etc...  Culture shapes how we see the world, ourselves, and others.  It has to do with values, beliefs, customs, and traditions, and is transmitted generation to generation.  The girls have created two "Wallwisher" walls where they have added electronic 'sticky notes' to share what they learned about various cultural traditions.  Take a look!

A Royal Banquet

The girls had their Royal Alliteration Banquet today!  We are reading The Phantom Tollbooth and Milo attends the Royal Banquet with King Azaz in Dictionopolis, where people literally eat their words!  Our girls brought in an alliteration snack, and wrote a speech about whether they thought numbers or letters were more important, or if they were equally important.  The girls were in character, and thanked their gracious queens, Queen Merrick and Queen Cheston for hosting the banquet!
