CAKE DECORATING

Ms. Merrick and Ms. Cheston's cake decorating club was held this afternoon.  We ended up with only two wonderful fifth grade girls with us to practice their skills, while their fellow 8th grade club members left for various sporting events.    They became experts!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Tell me what it means ……in many different languages.

Aretha Franklin’s we are NOT!  However, girls in Ms. Cheston’s class can combine a little diversity and wellness into a collage.  Girls used Google translator to learn how to say and/or write the word “Respect” in different languages.  Then the girls created a collage of the different languages and alphabets.  Take a look!

Come down the 5th floor wing and check them out!
Can you find the way that Vietnamese and Dutch people demand R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Map Projection

To help students understand projection and distortion, some students worked in groups to attempt to take an orange (their globe) and put it on a flat surface. They quickly understood how complicated and difficult it was to take a globe and make it into a map. They saw firsthand how distortion happens, and how some projections look "torn". They disagreed, just like many geographers have in the past, on how they could accomplish their task. In the end, we made a mess (geographers don't have juice squirting at them as they attempt to take Earth's 'skin' and place it on a map) :-), but they have a much better understanding of projection and distortion.

Camp Wright

Camp Wright was a success! Fun was had by all! Below are just a couple of pictures from our trip. Stay tuned for a slideshow and video clips! We had a dance-off that had everyone laughing and having a good time. We have some talented dancers in this class (and the teachers weren't bad either.)

Thank you for entrusting your children with us. ALthough we had gale force winds, and a bit of rain, nothing could dampen our spirits or keep the students out of the pool!

Compassion cont'd

The boys had a discussion about compassion today - as a follow up to their first pillar. They had some great ideas about what compassion meant to them. Below is their Wordle that represents the words that mean or are related to compassion for them. The larger the words, the more often it was repeated on the sheets they turned in at the end of the lesson.

Wellness Pillars

Today, we began a weekly discussion where each homeroom teacher will visit each homeroom to discuss the Wellness pillars - Respect, Responsibility, Honor, Compassion.  Each homeroom discussed one word this week and will continue to do until we've covered all four in depth with the students.  Below is the Wordle that came out of the discussion about Compassion.  Students had to write words that they felt meant compassion to them.  All the words were added into a Wordle.  The larger the words, the more popular the word was on the lists that were compiled.

FIRST DAY!!!

Well, it seems everyone survived the first day! We had a wonderful time meeting your students and are very excited for the year. We had an all school assembly and a middle school activity - tug-of-war contests. Not to brag, but Liotta and Cheston came out on top in 5th grade! We had an amazing dessert at lunch - cookies as big as the student's faces. Some loved them, but then ate too much and took naps on the 4 Square Game in the court! (see pictures below)
