Real Food Farms

The girls worked hard yesterday! They cleaned up a stream for several hours, then went with me to Real Food Farms where they put in another hour of moving mulch and pulling up matting in the hoop houses. They were dirty and tired on the way home! Parents - Now you know how hard they can work at home for you!

Making Bird Feeders for Earth Week!

Yesterday, the girls helped their 6th Age buddy make a Earth friendly bird feeder during our Earth Week activities. They tied a string around a pine cone, then smeared sunflower butter all over the pine cone. Together, they rolled the pine cone in bird seed before finishing it off with a pretty bow (Of course!). The 6th Agers took them home to hang in a tree! Then we all enjoyed the beautiful sunshine with a little recess!

Recess Fun!

We had a lot of great class spirit at recess today. It was fun to have the fields all to ourselves. :-)

Korean History Timelines

The girls had fun trying out two new tools on the internet. One let them collaborate and share their ideas in document, and the other allowed them to create online timelines.

We are reading the Single Shard, and in order to understand the story better, we learned about Korean history, and about the events leading up to the separation of the two Koreas.

The girls researched and chose 5 events from Korean History, and then had to find an accompanying picture for each event. They worked together on Titanpad to share their events. Then, they went to Timetoast and created an interactive timeline. We quickly found limits - it was challenging to show BC and it insisted on having a specific date, so we had to be creative! When they shared their timelines with the class, they saw their spelling and capitalization errors. Ahh...the need to proofread was reinforced!
Enjoy perusing and learning a bit about Korean History! Click on any dot on the timeline and a larger view of that date, event, and description will pop-up.

3rd Quarter Portfolios Go Home!

It is official - 3rd quarter is over! Report cards have been posted to PCR, and the girls spent some time with their 8th grade big sisters going over their portfolios. It was really sweet to see the care and interest the 8th grade girls showed the 5th grade girls. They gave thoughtful and kind feedback. Look for the portfolios in your daughter's backpack!

Teaching Respect

Last Wednesday, the girls wrote scripts about showing respect or disrespect for their 6th Age buddies. We met our buddies in the gazebo, where the girls acted out their scripts, and then asked the 6th Agers to determine if what they saw was respect or disrespect. If it was disrepect, we brainstormed together how the 'actors' could have shown more respect. Then, of course, we celebrated their success in correcting answering our questions with COOKIES! :-) Each girl gave their buddy a chocolate bunny and wished them a happy weekend.

Stick it To Me!

The girls reviewed their vocabulary today with a fun game. They exchanged vocabulary words written on sticky notes. Then, stuck one to their forehead without looking at it. They had to move around the room asking for clues about the definition so they could guess their word. They had so much fun! Then they wroked in partners to create a short quiz, and exchanged them with their classmates. They had to grade the quiz as well. Nearly everyone received a 100%! Guess they are ready for the quiz tomorrow, which will be online.

Girls Teach Complements

The girls tried their hand at explaining complements using a video animation site called Go Animate. They worked with a partner to write a script (with only 10 exchanges in dialogue to explain complements. Take a look!
